How do I take care of flowers in a vase? is a question I get asked a lot. Below is my typically answer.
To take care of flowers in a vase, follow these steps:
-
Start by trimming the stems of the flowers at a sharp angle, using a sharp pair of scissors or floral shears. This will help the flowers to absorb more water and stay fresh for longer.
-
Next, fill the vase with fresh, cool water, making sure to leave enough space at the top of the vase for the flowers to fit comfortably. Don't forget to remove any leaves or other debri that may have gotten in the water.
-
Add a floral preservative to the water, following the instructions on the package. This will help to keep the water clean and provide the flowers with the nutrients they need to stay fresh. (Note: I personally recommend changing out the water daily with fresh cold water instead of using the floral preservatives.)
-
Place the flowers in the vase, arranging them to your liking. If you are using a bouquet, you can use floral foam or floral tape to help hold the flowers in place.
-
Keep the flowers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, and drafts. This will help to prevent the flowers from wilting and dying prematurely.
-
Check the water level in the vase daily, and refill as needed to keep the flowers hydrated. You should also clean the vase regularly to remove any bacteria that may be harmful to the flowers.
-
Remove wilted flowers: As the flowers begin to wilt, remove them from the vase to prevent them from contaminating the water and causing the other flowers to wilt more quickly.
By following these steps, you can help to keep your flowers looking fresh and beautiful for as long as possible.
